TRINIDAD 5.5.11
Kerrie’s eye is looking pretty awful and I suggest to Alberto we get to the doctor first before we do anything.
This we do and for me while waiting I had lots to see!
Fire engine, horse carts with a canopy on top , just like out of Oklahoma, they are taxis and they carry about 8 people, tricycle taxis taking 2 persons, donkey and cart for carting goods wood etc.
Then a funeral procession passed with all friends and family walking behind and many with bicycle’s I guess to ride home after the service.
Householders getting their buckets of water from the water truck. Here again they quietly queue. They queue to go into the shops they queue to get their monthly coupon quota, queue for everything and they are patient unlike us.
Kerrie gets her script so we head to the beach where there is a chemist and I want to check it out as I think Ill pass on the tour into the mountains. A day at the beach, walk swim in the beautiful warm waters of the Caribbean ocean
It looks pretty good to me!
Back to the historic colonial town , little cobbled stones streets brightly coloured houses single story with again the fancy wrought iron over the shuttered windows
We go through the Palacio Brunet the former palace of the baron from the 18th century. Here we see stunning furniture and antiques, a huge kitchen with a stove running along a wall with lots of little holes where they put fire and then placed saucpans on top.
I might add he had 12 daughters. One got pregnant so they sold up and packed up and went back to Spain.
Trinidad was first settled in 1514 then Havana about 1519. It became a town of the pirates so there is a lot of history here
We wander around and see a quaint Paladas, which we book for tonight so hope it is ok.!
Back to the hotel for the afternoon rest! It is pretty hot about 34 degrees!
I go for a wander around the town just to see life in down town Trinidad!
It is so clean and they are very friendly and happy, no beggars and not a burka in sight here or in Havana! Plus n where to do any shopping!!
Kerrie goes to a local bar and does her post cards then we meet up and head off to the old town and the restaurant call 1514 in Simon Boliva street
What attracted us to this place when we saw it was the shutters were open and the main double door open and we could see all these tables set with old dinner sets, fine glasses, cutlery going for miles, epergnes with candles it was amazing. Just looked like a Victorian era scene from a movie!
We arrive about 7.00p.m. and we are greeted with an aperitif and many smiles! We sit at our table and then Michael chats to us and asks if we would like to have a look around. It wa built in 1760 and the same family has lived here and now runs the Paladas, which they only started 5 years ago when things started to loosen up the government.
Here I see a kitchen the same as the Palace we saw in the morning and ir is still being used. There are only 2 left and this is one!
They have another kitchen to the side which is also large but modern, same design but tiled with lovely tiles and has a fridge and freezer. It is all open as are all the rooms are opening into the central courtyard where tables are set up as well. There is even an old fashioned well with a stunning Venetian glass chandelier over it!
I ask about the antiques and they have all been handed down in the family.
We meet the band and take photos!
We order lobster again grilled! 3rd time and probably the last but it is so cheap!
We have salad first then lobster and a bottle of Chile CAB/SAV which is really good!
The musicians play for us and Granny dances with her halter top with bra showing beautifully across her back! She has no front teeth but boy can she dance!
So we have the band to ourselves and it is such fun music!
It is off season so pretty quiet! A few other couples come in and go to the courtyard. We get the bill , which was $50.00 for the 2 of us, Amazing 25.00 CUD bottle of wine ,crayfish, salad, one dessert and mineral water!!
Granny insists we go to the courtyard to listen to the music and watch her dance!! We find out shes 65!!!! Oh shit nearly my age but I think I look a little younger than her! But she could dance far far better than me !!!
We leave as we have been booked to see some more music and wander up the street saying lets just watch for one drink and then go!
We pass one music joint and it pumping, go to ours and no one there!! We walk in and the musos get ready to play but we excuse ourselves and leave.
The Problem is its 9.30p.m and these places don’t really start till about 11.00p.m. Too late for us oldies!!!
